This four part video series, produced by the NCAA, was designed for student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, to examine the issues surrounding drugs in sports from several perspectives. Emphasis is placed on circumstances that may predispose student-athletes to be a group at risk for drug misuse; types of drugs that student-athletes have associated with possible performance enhancement; types of drugs the student-athletes may use socially in attemps to cope with life's problems, and approaches for prevention, intervention, rehabilitation, and maintenance.

Athletes at Risk
The issues include pressures from the combination of academics and athletics, the mood swings associated with sports participation, pressure placed on the student-athlete by others, coping with injuries, the 'win-at-all-costs' attitude, coping with losing, and the availability of new social opportunities. 13 minutes. Drugs & Athletics Performance
Provides information on anabolic steroids, corticosteroids, amphetamines, growth hormones, anesthetics, DMSO, blood doping, and food supplementation in the form of amino acids and vitamins. Pharmacologists, psychologists, physicians, coaches, trainers, and health educators provide insights into the myths and risks of each of these substances. 26 minutes. WW-NK 3002

Recreational Drugs
Addresses the recreational use of drugs by student-athletes and how participation in sports may influence the decision to misuse drugs for recreational purposes. Discussed are issues regarding drug use as it pertains to stress, peer pressure, or overcoming injury, and to coping with the emotional highs and lows of sports. 15 minutes. WW-NK 3003

Prevention & Intervention
Examines the basic elements of drug education from a prevention perspective, with particular emphasis on providing student-athletes with up-to-date information. Students, athletes, coaches, psychologists, and health educators discuss important issues related to self esteem, and techniques related to coping and refusal skills as well as alternatives for performance enhancement. 20 minutes.
